* Clothes… bring layers. It never gets freezing, but it does get quite chilly, and changes depending on what neighborhood you’re in. It’s NOT “sunny California” as tourists often expect it to be.
* Land’s End is gorgeous… hiking trails in dense forest with coyotes, foxes, etc… as well as anise to snack on. If you hike down to the beach at low tide, there’s a tide pool with starfish, crabs, etc… As well as cliffs and bluffs with great views of the bay and ocean. Sutro Baths is also great. Ocean Beach, too. Fort Funston at the southern end of Ocean Beach is great, and has plenty of sandy hiking trails and fields of ice plant. Also has many cliffs and bluffs, and even hang-gliding. Golden Gate Park is also lovely… especially the Western half, past 19th Ave/the 1 crossover. The Presidio is also great… many hiking trails and forest. If you go out of the city, the Marin Headlands, Muir Beach, Muir Woods, and all the small beach towns north along 1 are wonderful.
* San Francisco’s very safe. The only areas I’d say to avoid are Bayview/Bernal Heights/Outer Mission/Mission past 23rd St. All are bordering each other and at the very southern end of the city, so you’ll never have to cross them to get anywhere else. And even the bad areas aren’t *that* bad (as compared to, say, the bad areas in New York or Chicago). Other neighborhoods, such as the Tenderloin, Potrero Hill, SOMA, etc… are very seedy and have tons of crack addicts crawling about, but they’re perfectly harmless and many are even very nice. The neighborhoods are “seedy”, but aren’t dangerous (they have very low violent crime rates). In fact, they’re also very popular with college students and families with young kids coz they’re relatively cheap. As long as you don’t do a stupid touristy thing like wear a fanny pack or count your money out in the open, you won’t have any problem whatsoever. And even if you DO… you still probably wouldn’t have a problem.
